  The growth of the urban area in greater proportions than the rural one is a phenomenon that arose with the industrialization and the economic development. The study of urban expansion patterns and their processes has been an important area for science, since it helps in understanding the dynamics of growth and provides subsidies for planning and decision making. Urban growth can be studied by interpreting the integration data of the temporal evolution of the urban area. The objective of this study was to analyze the expansion of the urban area of the city of Amambai (MS) during the period 1985 to 2015, by applying remote sensing techniques with images of TM and OLI sensors in a GIS environment, where it was done the quantify and mapping the evolution of the urbanized area; identication of patterns of expansion vectors; and identify the best area for urban expansion. The methodology used for the delimitation of the urbanized perimeter consisted of the photointerpretation of the satellite images, recognition of the urban perimeter and later the delimitation of the same by means of vectorization. Thus concluded that the best area for the growth of the urbanized area of Amambai is the northern direction and indicates that the growth of the south will not be feasible, since the indigenous area did not expand this hypothesis.

  O crescimento da área urbana em proporções maiores do que a rural é um fenômeno que surgiu com a industrialização e o desenvolvimento econômico. O estudo dos padrões da expansão urbana e seus processos tem sido uma área importante para a ciência, pois auxilia no entendimento das dinâmicas de crescimento e fornece subsídios para planejamentos e tomadas de decisões. O crescimento urbano pode ser estudado através da interpretação de integração de dados da evolução temporal da mancha urbana. Este trabalho teve o objetivo de analisar a expansão da área urbana do Município de Amambai (MS) durante o período de 1985 a 2015, através da aplicação de técnicas de sensoriamento remoto, com imagens dos sensores TM e OLI, em um ambiente SIG, para identificar os vetores de crescimento; quantificar e mapear a evolução da área urbanizada; identificar padrões de vetores de expansão; e identificar a melhor área para a expansão urbana. A metodologia utilizada para a delimitação do perímetro urbanizado consistiu em fotointerpretação das imagens de satélite, reconhecimento da mancha urbana e posteriormente a delimitação da mesma através de vetorialização. Conclui-se que a melhor área para crescimento da área urbanizada de Amambai é ao sentido norte e indica-se que o crescimento ao sul ficou inviável, pois instalou-se uma área indígena
