    • The author has been involved in an action research study to create diagnostic tests for historical skills. The three core skills on which the work has been concentrated are ‘enquiry’, ‘interpretation’ and ‘reconstruction’. Various examples of the diagnostic instruments used are given. Reactions to the approach by the teachers have been favourable.
