The paper describes research into the role of the computer, as a learning aid, in developing a ‘feel’ for structural understanding. This required the writer to work in an interdisciplinary manner, dividing his attention between the demands of engineering theory, computer‐assisted learning (CAL), educational issues and methods of evaluation. There has been very little CAL work published on this subject and so the research is very much a first step, on the basis of which a more refined development can take place later.
