The establishment of a management training institute for the agricultural sector in Nigeria was begun in 1981. The steps in the development of the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute and, in particular, the evolution of its first set of training courses are described. In designing the courses, standard management training techniques were used, but these were modified according to local needs. Course material was prepared in modular form so that the management trainer could tailor a course to a specific audience. Provision was made for the local production of audiovisual aids. Initial evaluation on the impact of these courses suggested they were both popular with participants and effective in improving managerial efficiency back on the job.
