  • Resumen
    • This article describes a joint project between the BBC and the National Extension College (NEC) to provide language support by television and print for second language learners. This project is of general educational interest because it attempted to:

      1. Provide self‐study teaching materials for second language learners which included the use of the mother tongue for student support.

      2. Use a ‘linked skills’ approach to language teaching (that is, teaching a specific practical skill alongside the language the student needs to practise the skill). In this case, after piloting, the BBC selected driving as the practical skill and the programmes and the book covered the language the student would need to learn to drive and take the driving test.

      3. Reach learners directly in their homes (rather than through community classes).

The article outlines the piloting and the background to the project. It covers the objectives and the challenges this project set for both organizations. It shows samples of the self‐study materials produced by NEC and tries to evaluate how successful the project was in meeting its objectives
