The paper provides a qualitative account of a specific computer‐based education joint venture in South African adult education. Emphasis is placed on the socio‐economic and political background in South Africa. Some of the problems of adult learners are described and reasons given for using a computer‐based education solution. Some of the issues that arose in the implementation of the solution are dealt with. Details are given of the ways in which the project was funded with further observations on the project in action.
