El poder hispano y la triangulación España-Estados Unidos-Latinoamérica

    El auge de las comunidades hispanas en Estados Unidos es un fenómeno en continuo crecimiento con impacto cuantificable en las distintas esferas de la sociedad estadounidense. Desde el último censo registrado en 2010, el conjunto de esta po- blación heterogénea —conformada por distintos lugares de origen, generaciones, estatus socia- les y gremios profesionales, entre otros— ascien- de a más de 50 millones, lo que supone un 17 % de la población total. Así como uno de cada seis estadounidenses y uno de cada cuatro niños, lo que refleja el carácter joven de esta comuni- dad, según los datos del Pew Research Center.

    En este sentido, el aumento de participación y re- presentación política en las elecciones de Estados Unidos y la inclusión de políticas dirigidas a estas comunidades consecuencia de la determinación de sus votantes en los resultados electorales jus- tifican que se hable del poder hispano en Esta- dos Unidos y en concreto del poder hispanoesta- dounidense, que nace con una identidad propia.

    La presencia de estas comunidades hispanas, con vínculos lingüísticos, históricos y culturales con Espa- ña, podría favorecer la vía de aproximación a la toda- vía primera potencia mundial y representa una ven- tana de oportunidad en la política exterior española como potencia media dentro de la UE. Incluso una estrategia transatlántica podría favorecer y mejorar la triangulación entre España, Estados Unidos y La- tinoamérica; y ayudar a establecer una relación cua- drangular en la que tenga cabida la Unión Europea.

    The rise of Hispanic communities in the United States is a phenomenon of continuous growth with a quan- tifiable impact on the different spheres of American society. Since the last census registered in 2010, the whole of this heterogeneous population — formed by different places of origin, generations, social sta- tus and professional associations, among others — amounts to more than 50 million which represents 17 % of the total population. As well as one in six Ame- ricans and one in four children are data that show the young character of this community, according to the Pew Research Center. In this sense, the increa- se of participation and political representation in the elections of the United States and the inclusion of policies addressed to these communities as a result of the determination of their voters in the electoral results, justifies speaking of the Latino power in the United States, and in particular the Hispanic-Ame- rican power, which is born with its own identity.

    The presence of these Hispanic communities, with linguistic, historical and cultural links with Spain, could favor the approach to the still world’s leading power and represents a win- dow of opportunity for the Spanish foreign policy as a medium power within the EU. Even a tran- satlantic strategy could improve the triangula- tion between Spain, the United States and Latin America; and help establish a quadrangular rela- tionship in which the European Union has a place.
