Una escultura de José Esteve Bonet en La Orotava (Tenerife)

    En septiembre de 1784 el escultor José Esteve Bonet concluía una imagen de Santa Catalina de Siena que fue remitida a la isla de Tenerife semanas después, gracias a la mediación del canónigo de Xátiva Miguel Lobera. De ese destino, el responsable del ajuste, el dinero pagado por ella y las cualidades que mostraba como pieza vestidera hay constancia en un apunte que incluye el diario o Libro de la Verdad, documento de vital importancia a la hora de conocer la actividad de su taller entre 1762 y 1802. En este artículo proponemos la identificación de dicha obra con una escultura transformada y alterada en lo iconográfico, que forma parte del patrimonio acumulado durante el siglo XIX por la actual parroquia de Santo Domingo de Guzmán en La Orotava (antes templo conventual de San Benito). Aunque no hay duda de ello porque la imagen está firmada, se plantea la posibilidad de que su primer emplazamiento fuera la iglesia de monasterio de San Nicolás que existió en dicha población, ya desaparecida, donde pudo colocarla un comitente que no ha llegado a desvelarse todavía.

    In September 1784 the sculptor José Esteve Bonet finished an image of Santa Catalina de Siena that was sent to the island of Tenerife, thanks to the mediation of the canon of Xátiva Miguel Lobera. Of the destination, the person responsible for its adjustment, the price reached and the qualities that it showed as a piece of clothing, there are references in a note that contains the diary or Libro de la Verdad, a document of great utility when it comes to knowing the activity of his workshop between 1762 and 1802. In this paper we propose the identification of this work with a sculpture now transformed and altered in the iconographic, which is part of the heritage accumulated during the 19th century by the parish of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in La Orotava (in the Modern Age convent of San Benito). Although there is no doubt about it because the work is signed, we raised the possibility that its first location would be the monastery church of San Nicolás that existed in this town, now disappeared, to which a devotee could donate it without specifying yet.
