Resumen de Fleximode ‐‐ a Strategy for Select Groups or an Option for All Students

John C. Bowles

  • One area currently receiving attention is that of Fleximode teaching, here regarded as the flexible organization of teacher contact time, teaching resources and student commitments that encourage individualized and self‐paced instruction. This paper reviews uses of Fleximode in Australasia and Scotland, with examples of its administrative and other costs. It derives economic and organizational criteria for successfully implementing Fleximode. Examples are given of the ways in which computers can help to reduce the load which teachers normally experience with Fleximode. It will be argued that it would be unwise not to fully utilize the technological opportunities that now exist. While there is considerable justification for the development of Fleximode teaching in its own right, microelectronic technology should be seen as an integral part of Fleximode programmes. Initial cost evaluations may appear prohibitive, but long‐term analysis could demonstrate overall cost‐efficiency. In the absence of careful institutional planning, the introduction of Fleximode teaching could result in unanticipated frustrations for educators and students that detract from the true objectives of this otherwise worthwhile concept.
