It is increasingly advocated that schools should take greater responsibility for organizing their own INSET activities. School‐focused staff development requires schools to analyse their own development needs and those of individual members of staff and to plan ways in which such needs might be met. A collaborative project, supported by the ESRC, involving East Sussex County Council and the University of Sussex, explored ways in which schools might be encouraged and helped in the process of drawing up and implementing policies to this effect. This paper discusses some of the main outcomes of the project.
