La autoría de las Coplas a la Veronica quedó oscurecida a causa del normalmente fiable Cancionero de Oñate Castañeda. El poema, que suele ser atribuido a Fray Íñigo de Mendoza, también se relaciona con Fray Ambrosio Montesino, no solo con una rúbrica, sino también con una nueva copla que bien pudiera ser apócrifa. Los ataques satíricos de ambos, Fray Íñigo y Fray Ambrosio, indican que el primer auditorio fue la corte noble, y especialmente la corte de los reyes. Originalmente, la promulgación de esta poesía en los cancioneros manuscritos es una manera de legitimar la nueva reina y su reinado después de la larga guerra civil.

The authorship of the Coplas a la Veronica was thoroughly muddied by none other than the usually reliable Cancionero de Oñate. This poem, which otherwise is reliably attributed to Fray Íñigo, is unreservedly placed in the Montesino camp not only by a rubric but by a possibly apocryphal copla. One has to acknowledge that these satirical attacks by both Fray Íñigo and Montesino indicate that the target audience was the noble court and especially the royal court. Originally the diffusion of this type of poetry in the manuscript cancioneros was part of a programme of legitimising the new queen and her reign after the long civil war.
