Resumen de The Way Out of Paralysis: Joyce and the Habitual Present Tense
James Joyce's "Dubliners" has generally been read as a critique of the paralysis of those living in Dublin. Using the lens of the Irish grammatical tense of the habitual present, however, this essay suggests that Joyce intentionally uses English grammatical modalities to approximate the Irish construct in order to imply the temporary nature of that paralysis: given enough time, most of the characters will find their way out of their particular paralysis, even if only to land in a different kind of paralysis.
