Nuevos campos de gas somero en la Ría de Vigo (Galicia)

  • Interpretation of new high resolution seismic records (2003 survey) has allowed mapping of three shallow gas fields for a first time at the innest part of the Ría de Vigo. X-ray photographs and voids of cores are semi-indirect evidences of gassy sediments. Furthermore, bubbles of gas coming out from the seabed in San Simon Bay are direct evidences of gas seeps. Analyses (GC-MS) of bubble samples confirm the presence of methane. The gas accumulates shallower at the inner areas of the Ría de Vigo whilst is deeper at the most external zones. In San Simón Bay the gas field is the shallowest in Ría de Vigo and gas accumulates almost at the present seabed (ranging from Oto 2.1 ms TWT ) being very frequent the gas seeps towards the water column. In the three new gas fields, the gas front occurs within the most recent seismic unit. This unit correspond to the Holocene sediments from the Ría de Vigo.
