From the information obtained in an extensive fieldwork on the Asturian Jurassic that includes a detailed mapping and the study of several stratigraphic sections, a general log for de basal Gijón Formation can be established. This one is subdivided', for the first time, in three members. The lower and upper members consist of limestones and dolomites; in the upper member typical oolitic carbonates and sandy limestones appear while the middle member is formed, mainly, of collapse breccias with carbonate clasts and marly matrix. These subunits show an increase of thickness to the east along a 70 km wide sector between Avilés and Ribadesella localities, reaching its maximum value, approximately 300 m, in the are of the valley of the España river. The variation of thickness was controlled, in part, by a set of faults before the deposition of the overlying sil iciclastic formations. This led to the development of a hörst and graben relief with differential preservation of the carbonate deposits of the marine Jurassic (Gijón and Rodiles formations), producing that they partial or totally disappear in local areas
