A new lithostratigraphical framework is proposed for the Upper Cretaceous (Upper ConiacianUpper Maastrichtian) to Palaeocene hemipelagic rocks of the Prebetic Zone (SE Spain). These rocks are relatively homogeneous and have been traditionally framed in large stratigraphic units, of great value for broad regional analyses, but unpractical for detailed sequence stratigraphic, biostratigraphic and geologic mapping works. The objective of this proposal is thus to rationalise the nomenclature of this area, and to erect a workable, mappable lithostratigraphical subdivision. This subdivision includes five new formations: La Naveta Fm (late Coniacian - late Santonian), Aspe Fm (earliest Campanian - early Maastrichtian), La Alberquilla Fm (early Danian - late Thanetian), Agost Fm (earliest Danian - late Thanetian), Pinoso Fm (latest Thanetian - middle llerdian); and extends the definition of other two previously defined units: Carche Fm (latest Santonian - early Maastrichtian) and Raspay Fm (late Maastrichtian).
