La alternancia de cosechas en la variedad de mandarino ‘Moncada’

    La alternancia de cosechas ocurre en algunas variedades de cítricos en las que a un año de abundante cosecha le sigue otro de floración y, con ello, de producción, bajas. Ello reduce la producción acumulada, y afecta negativamente la calidad del fruto.

    La inhibición de la floración por los frutos es la causa primaria de la alternancia, y cuantos más y más tiempo estén en el árbol mayor es su intensidad. Durante el periodo de inducción floral (nov–dic, HN) el gen CiFT2 aumenta su expresión en las hojas y manda una señal a la yema para que florezca. El fruto debe mandar, a su vez, otra señal a la hoja para que ello no ocurra. Descifrar la naturaleza del mensaje del fruto es absolutamente necesario para corregir el problema.

    En este artículo se describen los factores que promueven la alternancia, su efecto sobre la planta y la cosecha, el comportamiento varietal, y las técnicas para mitigarla.

    In citrus, certain cultivars are prone to alternate bearing, i.e. a year of heavy crop is followed by one of low flowering and light crop. This behaviour reduces accumulated production and negatively affects fruit quality.

    The inhibition of flowering by the fruit is the primary cause of the alternate bearing, which intensity increases with the number of fruits and the time remaining on the tree. During the floral bud inductive period (Nov–Dec, NH), CiFT2 gene expression increases in the leaf that sends a signal to the bud to flower. In turn, the fruit must also send a signal to the leaf to counteract it. Identifying the nature of the fruit’s message is absolutely necessary to correct the problem.

    This article describes the factors promoting alternate bearing, their effect on the tree and the fruit quality, varietal behaviour, and techniques to mitigate it.
