Resumen de Demonio, providencia y libre arbitrio en la historia indiana del padre Acosta

El presente trabajo pretende dar respuesta a un llamativo contraste en la Historia natural y moral del jesuita José de Acosta. Por un lado, es un tratado descriptivo de historia natural y etnografía y, por otra, en el libro V, un tratado sobre las idolatrías americanas, donde tiene un papel destacado, por lo menos en apariencia, el Demonio, como engaña-dor del género humano. Teniendo en cuenta la personalidad, los intereses intelectuales y la trayectoria biográfica del padre Acosta, se analizan las diferencias intelectuales y la competencia institucional entre su orden, la Compañía de Jesús, y la orden de predica-dores, en aquellos momentos su principal rival. Se concluye que, en buena medida, la intención de Acosta —al estudiar la cultura religiosa de otro pueblo sin rechazarla de plano— cuando redacta como lo hace el libro V de su Historia es desarrollar una estrate-gia que le permita eludir las dificultades que su obra habría podido tener para ser editada.

The present work tries to respond to a striking contrast in the Natural and Moral History of the Jesuit José de Acosta. On the one hand, it is a descriptive treatise on natural history and ethnography and, on the other, in Book V, a treatise on American idolatries, where the Devil has a prominent role, at least in appearance, as a deceiver of the human race. Considering the personality, intellectual interests and biographical trajectory of Father Acosta, the intellectual differences and institutional competition between his order, the Society of Jesus, and the order of preachers, at that time his main rival, are analyzed. It is concluded that, to a large extent, Acosta’s intention —by studying the religious culture of another people without rejecting it outright— when he writes Book V of his History as he does is to develop a strategy that allows him to avoid the difficulties that his work it could have had to be edited.
