El artículo presenta la trama de hechos e ideas que constituyen el contexto de la condena del Parlamento de París de la Defensio fidei de Suárez. Entre los hechos hay que desta-car: el juramento de fidelidad exigido por Jacobo I de Inglaterra, la respuesta de Belar-mino y Suárez del mismo y la extensión de la polémica a Francia procurada por el propio Jacobo I. Entre las ideas se subrayan: el decidido rechazo de las cortes de Francia e Inglaterra de la doctrina del poder indirecto del Papa in temporalibus (sustentada por Belarmino y Suárez), junto con la recusación de la doctrina de la resistencia y tiranicidio.

The article presents a framework of facts and ideas that constitute the context of the condemnation of the Paris Parliament of the Suárez’s Defensio fidei. Among the facts, we must highlight: the oath of allegiance required by James I of England, the response of Bellarmine and Suárez of the same and the extension of the controversy to France sought by Jacobo I. Among the ideas: the resolute rejection of the courts of France and England of the doctrine of the indirect power of the Pope in temporalibus (supported by the Jesuits), together with the refusal of the doctrine of resistance and tyrannicide
