Resumen de The Role of the Instructor in a Computer‐based Interactive Videodisc Education Environment
South Africa is facing large increases in high school population over the next 20 years. An option being explored vigorously in order to meet projected demands, is the use of technology. One example of this is the use of computer‐based interactive videodisc (CBIVD) technology to present in‐service education to teachers of mathematics. A pilot project saw 133 Black teachers from all parts of South Africa using CBIVD courseware to upgrade their mastery of the mathematics they were teaching. In this article aspects of a formative evaluation, which took a close look at the role the course instructors adopted, are presented. Indications emerging were that the instructors allowed the technology to usurp their teaching function. As a consequence, the need for a properly founded role model for instructors using CBIVD in such situations became apparent.
