  España es víctima de dos tipos de prejuicios, unos de orden ideológico: la leyenda negra y otros de naturaleza metodológica: el fetichismo de la diferencia difundida entre los lingüistas. La leyenda negra se fundamenta en un postulado: «los germanos y los reformados son superiores a los latinos y a los católicos»; el protestantismo sería la religión del progreso; permaneciendo files al catolicismo romano, España habría caído en la intolerancia, el oscurantismo y el subdesarrollo. En general, los académicos de hoy rechazan esta tesis. Sin embargo, la segunda categoría de prejuicios sigue siendo válida. Los lingüistas tienden a hacer hincapié en lo que distingue a una nación de otra.

  L’Espagne est victime de deux sortes de préjugés, les uns d’ordre idéologique : la légende noire, les autres de nature méthodologique : le fétichisme de la différence répandu chez les linguistes. La légende noire repose sur un postulat : «les Germains et les Réformés sont supérieurs aux Latins et aux catholiques» ; le protestantisme serait la religion du progrès ; en restant fidèle au catholicisme romain, l'Espagne aurait sombré dans l'intolérance, l'obscurantisme et le sous-développement. Dans l'ensemble, les universitaires aujourd'hui rejettent cette thèse. La seconde catégorie de préjugés, en revanche, est toujours d'actualité. Les linguistes ont tendance à mettre l’accent sur ce qui différencie une nation d’une autre.

  Spain is the victim of two kinds of prejudice, one of an ideological nature: the black legend, the other of a methodological nature: the fetishism of difference widespread among linguists. The black legend is based on a postulate: «Germans and Reformers are superior to Latins and Catholics»; Protestantism would be the religion of progress; remaining faithful to Roman Catholicism, Spain is said to have sunk into intolerance, obscurantism and underdevelopment. Overall, academics today reject this thesis. The second category of prejudice, on the other hand, is still relevant. Linguists tend to focus on what differentiates one nation from another.
