Protestas anti Charlie Hebdo: ¿Crece el Islam radical en las sociedades del Sahel?

    Tras los ataques terroristas contra Charlie Hebdo, la publicación de otra caricatura del Profeta del islam, Mahoma, por el semanario francés provocó la movilización de miles de musulmanes en las calles de varias ciudades del mundo islámico. En la región del Sahel – Mauritania, Mali, Níger y Chad y Sudán - las protestas fueron numerosas, y en general, pacíficas. Especialmente multitudinarias fueron las concentraciones en Mali mientras que las protestas en Níger fueron preocupantes por su deriva en episodios de vandalismo y violencia callejera. Por otro lado, el ataque terrorista del 7 de marzo en el centro de Bamako, el primero en varios años, nos hace preguntarnos sobre un posible crecimiento de un salafismo radical y violento dentro de las sociedades de mayoría musulmana del Sahel.

    After the terrorist attacks against Charlie Hebdo, the publication of another cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad by the French weekly led to demonstrations by thousands of Muslims in various cities in the Islamic world. In the Sahel – Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad and Sudan – the protests were numerous and generally peaceful. There were particularly large demonstrations in Mali, and, worryingly, the protests in Niger descended into acts of violence and vandalism. In addition, the terrorist attack in the center of Bamako on March 7, the first of its kind in several years, makes us wonder about the possible growth of a radical and violent Salafism in predominantly Muslim societies in the Sahel region.
