Los afanes por limitar el uso de violencia han sido constantes a lo largo de la Historia, si bien tras la Guerra de los Treinta Años, se produce un serio intento de evitar el uso desmedido e irracional de la violencia, comenzando la que se dio en llamar la era de la guerra limitada.
Fines, medios y modos limitados contribuyeron a hacer esa realidad posible; pero la Revolución Francesa constituyó el hito que hizo que, de nuevo, fines, medios y modos volvieran a ser ilimitados, que se volviera a la guerra total. Y han sido múltiples los esfuerzos por intentar, de manera recurrente, reconducir esa situación En la actualidad, los dos conflictos abiertos en y junto a las fronteras de Europa, Ucrania y el Daesh, presentan, respectivamente, las características de guerra limitada y guerra total respectivamente; sin embargo, se sigue considerando el sur como “el flanco” de Europa, cuando, como se plantea en el análisis, quizás debería ser “el frente”.

Eagerness to limit the use of violence have been constant throughout history, although after the Thirty Years' War, a serious attempt to avoid the excessive and irrational use of violence occurs, beginning which came to be called the era of limited war.
(Limited) ends, (limited) means and limited ways helped make this reality possible; But the French Revolution was the milestone that did that, again, ends, means and ways return to be unlimited, who turned into total war.
