Resumen de Trabajo de campo en comunidades virtuales pro self-harm

El presente artículo surge de la necesidad de reflexionar sobre cuestiones de tipo metodológico y epistemológico con las que he tenido que lidiar durante el trabajo de campo en comunidades virtuales pro self-harm. El interés por este tipo de comunidades aparece durante el trabajo de campo de mi tesis doctoral sobre acciones autolesivas corporales sin ideación suicida entre gente joven. Aunque en un primer momento el objetivo de mi investigación era caracterizar las razones individuales que se esconden tras las acciones y contextualizar los datos que señalan el incremento de gente joven —sobre todo mujeres— que canaliza a través del cuerpo su aflicción, pronto percibí que para ser capaz de analizar este nuevo —o no tan nuevo, como trato de defender en mi tesis— fenómeno en toda su complejidad, era necesario efectuar una incursión en el ciberespacio, y este es exactamente el punto de partida de mi reflexión. De hecho, es en este escenario donde empiezan a surgirme dudas acerca de cuál debe ser mi posición en el campo, acerca de cómo proceder, sobre la validez de las entrevistas que obtenía en este medio, acerca del tratamiento de las historias recolectadas en foros y blogs, sobre la posibilidad de traspasar la barrera virtual para acceder a encuentros cara a cara, lo que, de algún modo, me obligó a posicionarme e ir asentando las bases para esta y futuras investigaciones en este ámbito

This paper arises from the need to consider certain methodological and epistemological questions that I faced while working with pro-self-harm virtual communities. My interest in these communities arose while working on my doctoral thesis about bodily self-harm without suicide ideation in young people. Although at first the objective of my research was to characterize the individual reasons hidden behind bodily self-harm and to contextualise the published quantitative data which highlights the increase in young people (especially women) who express their afflictions through their bodies, I soon realized that to be able to analyse this new (or not so new, as will be discussed in my dissertation) phenomenon in all its complexity it was necessary to make an incursion in cyberspace, and this is exactly the starting point of this reflection. Once I started working in this setting I began to have doubts about various issues and methodological questions regarding my position in the field, such as what procedure I should follow, how valid the virtual interviews were, how I should handle the stories collected through forums and blogs, and whether I could cross the virtual barrier and set up face-to-face meetings with those involved. These questions forced me to adopt a position and to prepare the ground for this and future research in this field
