El curso del trastorno depresivo mayor es una enfermedad incapacitante, que requiere de un pronto abordaje para evitar que sus síntomas empeoren. Su fisiopatología esta explicada por distintas teorías, aunque ninguna de ellas es definitiva, es importante conocerlas para entender su abordaje. El diagnostico puede presentar un reto para el tratante ya que existen comorbilidades, otras patologías e inclusive medicamentos que pueden entorpecer el correcto diagnostico. El tratamiento de trastorno depresivo mayor busca la remisión de los síntomas y estudios han demostrado que puede ser farmacológico, psicoterapéutico o bien una combinación de ambos; siempre adecuado de manera individual a las necesidades de la persona con el trastorno depresivo.

The course of major depressive disorder is a disabling illness, which requires a prompt approach to prevent your symptoms from worsening. Its pathophysiology is explained by different theories, although none of them is definitive, it is important to know them to understand their approach. The diagnosis can present a challenge for the handler since there are comorbidities, other pathologies and even medications that can hinder the correct diagnosis. The treatment of major depressive disorder seeks the remission of symptoms and studies have shown that it can be pharmacological, psychotherapeutic or a combination of both; always individually suited to the needs of the person with depressive disorder.
