    Este trabajo tiene como objetivo determinar el sexo y la estructura por edades del servicio doméstico en las familias polacas desde el siglo XVI a 1930. Este estudio nos permitirá evaluar de modo más preciso la función socual del servicio doméstico en los hogares urbanos y las relaciones entre amos y sirvientes, basadas en un pacto mutuo. Los efectos de la industrialización en la Polonia del siglo XIX fueron seguidos por modificaciones sustanciales de esas relaciones al hacerles perder su antiguo carácter y ser cada vez más impersonales. La cuestión afecta a la nueva cualidad de esas relaciones: ¿eran considerados los servidores como algo inherente a los grupos sociales más bajos? Finalmente, nuestro objetivo es describir -en una perspectiva más general- las condiciones económicas del servicio doméstico: formas de salario, cargas complementarias, alojamiento, etc.

    This paper´s main goal is to determine the sex and age structure of the domestic staff working in Polish families from 16th century to 1930s. This study will allow us to evaluate more precisely the social function of domestic service in urban households and the relations between masters and servants that were based on a mutual agreement. The effects of industrialization in 19th century Poland followed by essential modifications of those relations made them lose their ancient character to become more and more impersonal. The question concerns the new quality of those relatioships: are the servants considered as belonging to lower social groups? Finally our objective is to describe -in a more general perspective- the financial conditions of domestic work: forms of salaries, complementary charges, accomodations, etc.
