    El siguiente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar los factores por los cuales se conformó San Vicente de León como institución monástica entre el 1005-1036 en la ciudad de León. La documentación nos revela un centro eclesiástico característico del monacato propio altomedieval, por tanto, muy distante de los parámetros canónicos fijados tras la Reforma Gregoriana y durante la Baja Edad Media. Aunque, de entrada, y a nivel institucional, un monasterio como éste parecer ser muy ambiguo, si nos acercamos a él desde una óptica, socio-cultural y diplomática, encontraremos que su conformación se debe a la influencia episcopal y aristocrática, y que a su vez funcionó como un centro funerario aristocrático, una plataforma para el ascenso social, etc.

    The purpose of this article is to analyze the elements, which contributed to the foundation and development of the San Vicente de León monastery between the years 1005-1036 in León in the context of monasticism in the Early Middle Ages. Even though in medieval historiography monasteries such as this one were often depicted as obscure institutions, from a socio-cultural and diplomatic level it is possible to see that such perspective is not at all correct. San Vicente de León monastery’s conformation can be explained through the observation of the social interaction that took place around it, particularly, one that included donors and monastic protectors, the episcopal power, members of the aristocratic elite, and medium-level owners. At the same time, this social interaction turned San Vicente de León into an aristocratic funerary center, and a springboard for social advancement, among many other things.
