Llegados los misioneros católicos al Imperio Celeste, éstos tuvieron que afrontar inevitablemente una serie de preceptos éticos y políticos basados en el pensamiento de Confucio. Para los chinos convertidos al cristianismo, una de las cuestiones más complejas fue aquella del matrimonio, ya que el sistema del concubinato no solamente era aceptado moralmente y culturalmente por la sociedad, sino que a su vez estaba protegido y bien definido por las leyes imperiales. El presente artículo da a conocer la historia de Wang Zheng (1571-1644), un mandarín de alto rango que se convirtió en el siglo XVII. ¿Cómo afronta esta dicotomía?¿Cuál es la reacción de los familiares?¿Qué destino le espera?

Once in the Celestial Empire, the Catholic missionaries inevitably had to deal with a number of ethical and political matters arising from the thought of Confucius. Fot the Chinese converts to the Christian faith one of the most challeging issues was that of marriage, for the system of concubinage was not only morally and culturally part of their society, but was also defined and protected by the Empire's laws. This article brings out the story of Wang Zheng (1571-1644), a high ranking Mandarin who converted in the seventeenth century. How did he face up to the challenge of this dichotomy? What were the reactions of the members of his family? What was his fate?
