  • A Pliocene succession cropping out to the north of the Santa Pola cape (Bajo Segura Basin, Alicante, Spain) is studied. The pliocene materials disconformably overlie the Messinian Terminal Complex. The first pliocene unit, composed of fosiliferous silty marls, was deposited in an open shallow platform. Its nannoplankton associations points to a middle-late Zanclien age. The second unit consist of calcareous sandstones with frequent fossils and tractive structures, forming shallowing-upward sequences related to the progradation of beach systems. The last pliocene unit, quite thin, consists of fresh water lagoon marly deposits.
