Resumen de Una incursión de Daniel Jiménez de Cisneros en la entomología

Jesús Ignacio Catalá Gorgues

  • Despite his dedication for preference to geology and palaeontology, Daniel Jiménez de Cisneros (1863-1941 ), natural history professor at Instituto General y Técnico (Secondary School) in Alicante at first third of 20th century, also carried forward some researches at field of zoology. Most notable of these contributions were centred in studies about common mosquitoes development and possibilities of their control. These studies were initially conceived as complementary activity for his pupils, but Jiménez de Cisneros, encouraged by patriarch of Spanish natural history Ignacio Bolivar, decided to continue with them in a most deep scientific sense, but maintaining a style of popularization. Although he did not develop any studies specifically devoted to malaria mosquitoes, he thought about possibilities to extend his research to this question. Malaria was an important health problem in Alicante at time. These works represent the attempts of Jiménez de Cisneros in order to incorporate experimental methods to natural history studies, a typical example of studies at border zone.
