    El objeto de este artículo es el de plantear algunas propuestas sobre las relaciones entre los centuriones y la población civil, en este caso, en Egipto. Para ello, voy a centrarme en la figura de un centurión, de nombre Amonio Paterno, del que conservamos información a través de tres papiros (P. Mich. III 175, BGU II 515=Chr.Wilck. 268 y BGU II 454), con la singularidad de que todos ellos están contextualizados en el mismo espacio-tiempo, ya que los tres casos se desarrollan en la región del Fayum y en el año 193. Dejando a un lado las funciones tradicionales que se le han asignado al centurión, los papiros pueden llegar a sugerir el alto nivel de integración del centurión entre la población civil, que, como se verá más adelante, sin ser un hombre muy versado en los recovecos jurídicos tendía a aplicar la ley del “sentido común”, del mismo modo que lo hacía en el contexto militar.

    The purpose of this article is to present some propositions on the relationship between centurions and civilian population, in this case, in Egypt. In this regard, I shall focus on the figure of a particular centurion named Ammonius Paternus, about whom we gain information through three papyri (P. Mich. III 175, BGU II 515 = Chr. Wilck, 268 and BGU II 454), with the singularity that the three of them are contextualized in the same space-time, since the three cases refer to situations occurring in the Fayum region in the year 193. Leaving aside the traditional functions assigned to this centurion, the papyri may suggest the high level of his integration with the civilian population. As we shall see later, he was prone to apply “common sense” as he did in his military activities, even if he was not versed on legal matters.
