  • The concept of inclusion cannot be properly understood without the concept of exclusion. When there is more inclusion, there is less exclusion. Politics of inclusion/exclusion accordingly revolves around the questions of who will be included as an insider, who will be excluded as an outsider, and who has the authority to demarcate these lines (Thomassen 2017). Since political inclusion pertains to identity and difference, it goes hand in hand with the concepts of representation and recognition. Representation testifies to the fact that the terms of inclusion and exclusion remain open to an ongoing process of interpretation and revision (Disch 2012). This is also true for recognition (Markell 2003).
