La colección de punzones y matrices del obrador de fundición de la Imprenta Real en dos inventarios decimonónicos

    Desde prácticamente la aparición del arte tipográfico los impresores españoles se vieron obligados a trabajar con letrerías realizadas en unos pocos juegos de matrices importados o con tipos adquiridos directamente en fundiciones foráneas. La restauración de las artes del libro que se produjo en España durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII propició la especialización de los artesanos más capaces en el grabado con fines tipográficos. Los punzones y matrices producidos por Jerónimo Gil en el obrador de fundición de la Real Biblioteca, en el que se fundieron los tipos que se usaron para imprimir las mejores obras españolas de la Ilustración, pasaron a finales de siglo a la nueva Imprenta Real. Esta colección se fue ampliando a lo largo del XIX con otros materiales, algunos realizados en el país y otros muchos importados de las mejores fundiciones del continente, como las de Bodoni y Didot. En este trabajo se reproducen dos inventarios decimonónicos de dicha colección en los que se ofrecen informaciones de gran interés para conocer su composición hasta el más mínimo detalle.

    Since practically the appearance of typography, Spanish printers worked with letters made in a few sets of imported matrices or with types acquired directly from foreign foundries. The restoration of the book arts that took place in Spain during the second half of the eighteenth century led to the specialization of the most skilled artisans in the art of punchcutting. The punches and matrices produced by Jerónimo Gil in the Royal Library (Real Biblioteca) type-foundry, in which the types used to print the best Spanish works of the Enlightenment were cast, at the end of the century passed to the new Royal Printing Press (Imprenta Real). This collection was expanded throughout the 19th century with other materials, some made in the country and many others imported from the best foundries on the continent, such as those of Bodoni and Didot. In this article, two inventories from the 19th century are reproduced, allowing the composition of this collection to be known in detail.
