In the years of the lively debate on the Reformation, the existence of numerous sonnets, in Vittoria Colonna's poetic corpus, dedicated to saints poses many problems: the saints are presented as men chosen by God, predestined, who cannot boast about any merit, but they are also men who follow, with effort, the example of Christ. The poetess explicitly refers to the much despised Legenda Aurea, but neglects its devotional aspects; she seems to treat the saints more as models of faith rather than as objects of veneration, but asks for their intercession; she often speaks of saints in prose and verse, but she does not mention them in her will. Highlighting these contradictions, this contribuition attempts to identify a solution through investigation of Colonna's biography, the historical context and the chronology of composition of these texts.

Negli anni che del vivace dibattito sulla Riforma, la presenza di numerosi sonetti dedicati ai santi nel corpus poetico di Vittoria Colonna pone non pochi problemi: i santi sono presentati come l'eletto di Dio, il predestinato che non può vantarsi di merito alcuno, ma anche come coloro che seguono con fatica l'esempio di Cristo; la poetessa si rifà esplicitamente alla tanto esecrata Legenda aurea, ma ne tralascia gli aspetti devozionali; pare trattare i santi più come modelli di fede che come oggetti di venerazione, ma ne chiede l'intercessione; parla di santi in prosa e in versi, ma non ne fa menzione nel proprio testamento. Il contributo, mettendo in luce queste contraddizioni, tenta di individuarne una soluzione nell'indagine della biografia, del contesto storico e della cronologia di composizione dei testi.
