  • Resumen
    • This paper concerns the trajectory of FuturePlaces, originally a digital media festival based in Porto, Portugal. Inaugurated in 2008, FuturePlaces subsequently assumed the form of an anual media lab. The paper presents an overview of its framework and conceptual premises throughout the various editions and proceeds to discuss the recent decision to place the project on hold. It is argued that the project’s integrity benefits from a pause for reconsideration, given the current, dramatic shifts in the dynamics between media and the socio-cultural fabric, as well as the evidence that the city of Porto, the case study of FuturePlaces from its onset, has meanwhile undergone substantial changes that could never be devoid of impact in the media lab’s premises. These shifts and evidences dictate a state of reflection that is a necessity and a choice, a challenge to the imperative of expansion and the pervasive duty of continuity as measures of success.
