    La indexicalització social i l’Enregisterment són termes centrals d’un model teorètic provinent del Estats Units que té per finalitat descriure la connexió entre formes devariació lingüística i comportament social a un nivell de taxonomia formal. La visiócentral d’aquesta teoria dóna importància a la interrelació entre actuació social i cons-ciència lingüística. Volem il∙lustrar que amb aquesta metodologia es poden donar nous impulsos a l’anàlisi de problemàtiques actuals de la sociolingüística europea com ‘migració i llengua’ o ‘vida urbana i usos lingüístics’. Ens interessa particularment el cas del català que la teoria nord-americana de l’Enregisterment ja ha tractat d’un temps ençà. Així es podrà comprovar que comportaments explícits com el canvi de llengua o l’ús em-blemàtic de formes lingüístiques poden servir com a expressió d’una indexicalització social del català. Aquesta es pot analitzar fent veure que una actuació social autèntica i la integració social a Catalunya s’assoleixen bàsicament a través de formes de l’Enregisterment lingüístic.

    Social indexicality and enregisterment are basic notions of a theoretical model elaborated in the USA, whose aim is to describe the relationship between the useof language variation and patterns of social behavior on a level of formal classifications.This analytical approach is characterized by focusing on the interrelation of social performance and language awareness. In our contribution we want to show how this modern methodology can give new impetus to the study of today’s problem areas in Europelike ‘migration and language’ or ‘urban life and language use’. In particular, we are interested in the case of Catalan which has been treated for some time by proponents of the North-American enregisterment theory. This leads us to indicate that explicit ways ofsocial conduct like language shift or the emblematic use of linguistic forms can beinterpreted with regard to the social indexicality of Catalan. We thus analyze them in away which shows that authenticity and integration in Catalan society can be achieved to a considerable extent by practicing forms of linguistic enregisterment.
