Por favor, compréndeme. La idoneidad del medio del cómic para el desarrollo de la empatía

    El presente artículo se estructura en dos partes: en primer lugar, ofrece una reflexión sobre el concepto de obra testimonial ya que numerosas obras catalogadas como autobiográficas o biográficas señalan problemas sociales coincidentes y reiterativos; sin embargo, no siempre se reconoce su valor testimonial. En segundo lugar, se plantea un análisis del cómic en comparación con otros dos medios (cine y literatura), para demostrar su idoneidad a la hora de generar una respuesta empática en el público, y así ofrecer una explicación de la proliferación del medio del cómic a la hora de representar grupos oprimidos. Para ello se comparan tres obras que relatan la historia semiautobiográfica de la autora Phoebe Gloeckner, que narran una misma historia (con ligeras variaciones), producidas en formato cómic, cine y novela. A través de ellas, se analizan las distintas lecturas que se producen en cada uno de los diferentes medios. Así, tomando como punto de partida los resultados del estudio "Antropographics" (Bertini, Boy, Emerson, Oded, Satterthwaite y Vikram Pandey, 2017) y declaraciones de los autores de historietas Chester Brown y Alison Bechdel sobre las capacidades únicas del cómic, se concluye que es este medio idóneo para el desarrollo de una comunicación más empática con el público y se señala su potencial para fomentar el cambio social.

    This paper focuses on two areas. The first reflects on the concept of documentary work - specifically, numerous works that have been classified as autobiographical or biographical while drawing attention to similar, recurring social problems, yet their value as documentary work has not always been recognized. The second will compare comics with other media, such as film and literature, in order to analyze the way the medium is able to engender an empathic response. This analysis is intended to offer an explanation for the proliferation of comics representing oppressed groups and minorities. To do this, the study compares three works that tell the semi-autobiographical story of the author Phoebe Gloeckner, as they express the same story (with some variation) through the formats of comics, film and prose. Through this process, we analyze the different means of communication employed by each of the different media to achieve the intended reaction. With reference to the results of the study "Antropographics" (Bertini, Boy, Emerson, Oded, Satterthwaite and Vikram Pandey 2017) and the statements of graphic-novels´authors Chester Brown and Alison Bechdel about the capabilities of comics, concludes that they are the ideal medium for the development of a more empathetic communication with the public and, therefore, demonstrate its potential to promote social change.
