    En el debate en torno a la conformación y el funcionamiento del aparato de la Monarquía Hispana en el siglo XVI, este artículo se ocupa de estudiar una de las piezas claves de aquel complejo engranaje: los virreyes americanos. La Monarquía confirió a estos oficiales un enorme poder y les asignó una multiplicidad de funciones que, en algunos casos, provocaron que los virreyes entraran en conflictos con otros actores importantes, como por ejemplo los miembros de las Audiencias. Por lo tanto, estudiar el papel de los virreyes, como institución, como oficio, como dignidad, como función o como simple representante del rey, se trata de un elemento estructural necesario para entender la manera de gobernar de la Monarquía Hispana.

    In the debate about the conformation and functioning of the apparatus of the Spanish Monarchy in the sixteenth century, this article examines one of the key pieces of that complex gear: the American viceroys. The Monarchy confered these officers enormous power and assigned them a multitude of functions which, in some cases, caused the viceroys to enter into conflicts with other important actors, such as members of the Audiencias. Consequently, studying the role of the viceroys, as an institution, as an office, as a dignity, as a function or as a simple representative of the king, is a structural element necessary to understand the way of governing the Hispanic Monarchy.
