Italy, “as a whole, is a kind of prism, in which all the landscapes of the world are reflected”, “it is a distillate of the world”, writes Guido Piovene in his Italian Journey. The famous report is an “inventory of Italian things” (as Piovene himself says), which shows, like a pedestrian tour, all the aspects and the essences of the Belpaese. Piovene represents the variety and complexity of Italy in the first half of the 50s, when the country is suspended between the rural and the provincial heritage and the economic boom. He does that by denying any idea of picturesque: he is convinced of the profound moral, cultural and pedagogical – therefore humanistic – value of his investigation, which aims to discover the multiple aspects of a “country that is unaware of itself”.

Il celebre reportage, lungo tre anni, è un “inventario delle cose italiane”, che attraversa con passo lento e misurato, da pedestrian tour, tutte le essenzee ledifferenze della Penisola.
