    El presente artículo estudia al gremio tranviario de Santiago durante sus primeros 17 años de luchas laborales destacándolo como un sujeto clave para entender el surgimiento de una legislación social en el país. A partir del concepto de ‘posición estratégica’ se estudia el desarrollo de las formas de lucha del gremio y de la reacción de los otros actores involucrados. Se hace hincapié que la toma de conciencia del rol dentro de la economía capitalina fue fundamental para entender las formas de lucha adoptadas por el gremio, la creciente fuerza de éste y el desarrollo de los debates públicos acerca de la intervención estatal sobre los conflictos laborales. Para tal argumento, la presente investigación se basó en diarios de la época y documentos de varias instituciones estatales.

    This article studies the tramway workers of Santiago during its first 17 years of labour struggles highlighting it as a key subject to understand the emergence of a social legislation in the country. Based on the concept of ‘strategic position’, the development of the forms of struggle of the worker and the reaction of the other actors involved is studied. It is emphasized that the awareness of the role within the capital’s economy was fundamental to understand the forms of struggle adopted by the union, the growing strength of this and the development of public debates about state intervention on labour disputes. For such argument, the present investigation was based on newspapers of the time and documents of several state institutions.
