This paper analyzes several markers of opposition or contrast in the essayDiccionari per a ociosos (Dictionary for the idle) by Joan Fuster and in its translations toSpanish, English, Italian and French. It adopts a contrastive stylistic perspective thattakes into account the genre of this book and studies the discursive construction of theauthor’s ethos. The paper examines firstly the main concessive constructions (includingconcessive conditionals) and connectives contained in the essay, contrasting them withthe choices made by translators. Later, it includes other oppositive/contrastive dis-course markers within the texts examined. Furthermore, it characterizes the degree ofgrammaticalization reached by these markers in each language
