Resumen de Primórdios batistas no Brasil: abertura de igrejas e formação da equipe missionária (1881-1886)

The aim of this article is to characterize the insertion of american baptist missionaries in Brazil and to elucidate the strategies and choices of such a group for the establishment of baptist churches in the country. The text, based on the arrival in Brazil of a Baptist missionary team sent by the Southern Baptist Convention of the United States, develops the process of bringing the group closer to the brazilian population, the expansion of churches in some capitals and the constitution of a first group of baptist congregations in Brazil between 1881 and 1886.

O objetivo desse artigo é caracterizar a inserção de missionários batistas estadunidenses no Brasil e elucidar as estratégias e escolhas de tal grupo para o estabelecimento de igrejas batistas no país. O texto, partindo da chegada no Brasil de uma equipe missionária batista enviada pela Convenção Batista do Sul dos Estados Unidos, desenvolve o processo de aproximação do grupo com a população brasileira, a expansão das igrejas por algumas capitais e a constituição de um primeiro grupo de congregações batistas no Brasil.
