    El paseo Marítimo es una de las arterias principales de Palma. Construido hace menos de 75 años con voluntad turística, ha reorientado la trama urbana y se ha convertido en imagen identificativa de la ciudad. La construcción del Dique del Oeste, protegió la bahía de los temporales permitiendo ganar terreno al mar con una carretera de unión puerto-aeropuerto, el paseo Marítimo. Poco después de su inauguración tuvo que ampliarse para satisfacer las necesidades del turismo de masas y desde entonces ha sufrido diversas modificaciones.Simultáneamente, a lo largo del trazado se han edificado equipamientos para alojar y entretener al turista. En todo ello la fotografía pública ha funcionado como instrumento de promoción del lugar.Desde la década de 1940 y paralelamente al crecimiento del paseo, se multiplica el número de imágenes respecto las generadas anteriormente.Éstas permiten hacer un seguimiento de las obras, a la vez que se transforman en reclamo turístico que directa o indirectamente difunde la arquitectura. Así, al patrimonio arquitectónico histórico que salpica el trazado del paseo Marítimo se le une un patrimonio edilicio contemporáneo, cerrándose un círculo donde el alojamiento creado para que el turista acuda y visite la ciudad, acaba siendo reivindicado como elemento patrimonial.

    The paseo Marítimo is one of the main streets of Palma. Built less than 75 years ago with a touristic aim, it has transformed the urban configuration and has turned into a symbolic image of the city. The construction of the Dique del Oeste, protected the city from the sea storms. It permitted the creation of a road joining the port and the airport in the seafront, the paseo Marítimo. But with the arrival of mass-tourism it had to be enlarged and since then, it has suffered several modifications. At the same time, it has been occupied with buildings for the tourists. In this process, published photography has played an important role as a promoter of the site. From the 40’s and during the construction of the promenade, the number of photographs increased. They allow doing a study of the evolution of the urbanization process, while they serve as touristic advertisement that spread the architecture. So, a contemporary architectural heritage is being added to the historical architectural heritage which we can find all along the paseo Marítimo. The buildings made for the tourists to come and visit the city end up being claimed as heritage elements.
