The paper starts with the assumption that tourism affects urban and territorial planning. With the objective to pursue economic development through the creation of imaginary spaces that can appeal people, touristbased planning model have often entailed loss in sense of place, depletion of historic-cultural heritage and increase of consumerism. Main aim of this paper is to demonstrate that urban planning models that follow nature and tradition of places can give rise to a long-lasting supply. To better understand the positive interaction between tourism development and respect of sense of place, strategies adopted in Ballyhoura (IE) and in Lille (FR) were reported. Territorial assets can be converted to the actual touristic trends in order to make a balance between visitors’ expectation and respect of genius loci.
