  • Resumen
    • The fourth edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumors of the Pituitary Gland was released in 2017 (Table 1).1 Several changes are recommended in the pathologic classification of tumors, in addition to description of new entities and redefinition of old entities. These changes include the following: (1) a novel approach for classifying pituitary neuroendocrine tumors according to adenohypophyseal cell lineages; (2) changes on the histologic grading of pituitary neuroendocrine tumors with the elimination of the term atypical adenoma; (3) changes in the classification of non-neuroendocrine pituitary tumors, including those tumors arising in the posterior pituitary; and (4) introduction of new entities.

In this review, the author focuses on the changes of tumors of the anterior pituitary gland, that is, pituitary neuroendocrine tumors. The reader is referred to the WHO Endocrine Tumors and Nervous System Tumors books for review of the nonneuroendocrine tumors and other tumors involving the pituitary gland.1,2
