Resumen de Angry Looks form the Bathroom :: A Corpus Analysis of Contemporary Mexican Romantic Novel

Ana Ruth Sánchez Barrera, Ignacio Rodríguez Sánchez

  • This chapter analyses representations of women in contemporary Mexican romantic novel drawing from three disciplines: corpus linguistics, literature studies, and cultural studies. Following Stubb's (1995) canonical proposal, two corpora were created and compared. The first corpus comprises romantic novels "published" by Mexican women writers since 2010 ; the second corpus comprises romantic novels published between 1960 and 1976 by the two most representative writers of this genre in Spain and Mexico. Our analysis is focused along two axes : representations of the characters' bodies and spaces inhabited by them. These axes are the result of clustering some semantic fields revealed by the keywords obtained with AntConc. This tool was also used to revise collocations of the body axis and concordances related to the space axis.
