  Amaranthus palmeri se ha convertido en una de las malas hierbas más importantes en la agricultura de Estados Unidos de América. En los últimos años, se dispone de datos que indican que esta especie está invadiendo agroecosistemas en otros países y regiones, incluyendo España. El éxito y agresividad de esta mala hierba se debe a su alta capacidad reproductiva, alta tasa de crecimiento, y rápida evolución de resistencia a múltiples mecanismos de acción de herbicidas. Además, tiene una capacidad de adaptación que le permite invadir ecosistemas diferentes a las condiciones de su centro de origen, como resultado de su reproducción dioica, alta diversidad genética, y su potencial de hibridación con otras especies del género Amaranthus. Debido a su agresividad, cuando hay poblaciones establecidas de A. palmeri, se considera crítico desarrollar planes de manejo integrado que se enfoquen en eliminar la producción de semilla de esta mala hierba. En países o regiones donde esta especie está iniciando el proceso de invasión, se recomienda que tanto las autoridades regulatorias como el sector agrícola en general tomen medidas agresivas para prevenir el establecimiento y dispersión de esos focos de introducción e invasión, preferiblemente procurando la erradicación de esta especie

  Amaranthus palmeri has become one of the most important weed species in the agriculture of the United States of America. During the last few years, there have been reports indicating that this species is invading agroecosystems in other countries and regions, including Spain. The success and weediness of this weed are due to its high reproductive potential, high growth rate, and fast evolution of resistance to herbicides of multiple mechanisms of action. Furthermore, this species has high adaptability that enables invasion of ecosystems different than its center of origin, resulting from its dioecious reproduction, high genetic diversity, and its potential for hybridizing with other Amaranthus species. Due to its weediness, when there are A. palmeri established populations, it is critical to develop integrated mana - gement plans that focus on eliminating seed production. In countries or regions where this species is starting to invade, it is recommended that not only regulatory authorities, but also the agricultural sector as a whole, implement aggressive actions to prevent the establishment and dispersion, preferably aiming to eradicate this weed from those places where it is first detected
