A fin de demostrar la relevancia del estudio de los procesos de creación de documentos foto-gráficos para la investigación de procesos sociales, se analiza la manufactura de fotografías haciendo hincapié en la información indical de estas. Asimismo, se cuestiona el uso ilustrativo de las imágenes y se sugiere el empleo de estas como fuente histórica. Por tales razones, se mencionan las metodologías de contextualización e incorporación de materiales fotográficos en la investigación de temas urbanos del siglo XIX. Así, se confirma el uso científico de los documentos fotográficos para el estudio de temas urbanos, es específico de la ciudad de San Luis Potosí

Aiming to demonstrate the relevance of the study of the creation processes of photographic documents for the research of social processes, photo manufacturing is analyzed with emphasis on the indexical information of these. The illustrative use of the images is also questioned and their use as a historical source is suggested. For these reasons, the contextualization and incorporation methodologies of photographic materials are referred to in the investigation of urban themes of the 19th century. Thus, the scientific use of photographic documents for the study of urban topics is confirmed, specific to the city of San Luis Potosí
