The stone pine (“Pinus pinea”) is a tree that was introduced in the Montseny massif far back in time for different uses and for its symbolism. It grows in open Mediterranean forests and in maquis shrublands and pastures, above all in sandy soil. It has been greatly favoured for the production of timber, firewood and charcoal, and it has also been planted as an ornamental tree. Pine nuts are highly appreciated as snacks and in pastry. The stone pine is rarely found at altitudes of over 900 metres and it is locally abundant in the eastern half of Montseny, where granite predominates.
There are notably dense stands of stone pine between the towns of Cànoves and Breda and in the area around La Costa del Montseny and La Garriga. Its extension has declined in recent years as a result of the spontaneous dynamics of the local vegetation, which is evolving towards holm oak or pubescent oak forests, and due to various pests.
