The gradual increase in the number and intensity of attacks against human rights defenders and, in particular, against land and environment defenders, has brought the issue to the international agenda and has led to the creation of different specific protection mechanisms. Among these mechanisms, this text fixes its attention on the emergence of national mechanisms for the protection of human rights defenders and the environment in Latin America, promoted by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights itself. The analysis of the mechanism created in Mexico allows us to present its scope and its main characteristics, but also its limitations.
