El propósito de este artículo es analizar la importancia de una asociación civil clave en el campo cultural tucumano —la Sociedad Sarmiento— y su articulación con el poder político provincial a principios del siglo XX. La relación entablada entre ambas esferas durante el período bajo estudio se encuentra atravesada por tres importantes cuestiones interrelacionadas:
la construcción de un local propio; los motivos de la división de la Asociación y la conformación de otro espacio asociativo;
por último, la formación del grupo fundador de la universidad provincial en el seno de esa sociedad cultural.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the importance of a civic association that was key to Tucumán’s cultural field — the Sarmiento Association— and its articulation with provincial political power at the beginning of the 20th century.
The relationship established between both spheres during the studied period presents three major interrelations: the construction of their own premises; the reasons behind the split of the Association and the creation of another associative space; lastly, the creation of the province’s university founding group within this cultural society.
